Who woulda guessed? I’m certainly not one of those shops trying to add really weird, f%@#ed up items to my shop to try and bait April into including me on her world-famous blog, Regretsy. I’m just an avid reader of the quirky, over-the-top snarky humor that the blog features. I eat up the articles, laughing hysterically through them. Now this web site certainly isn’t for everyone. Basically, it’s a humor blog about Etsy, that features some pretty chuckle-worthy Etsy listings worth no where near the $$$ the sellers are asking for. Some posts call-out embarrassing spelling errors, mistagging and titling items as “Steampunk.” Regretsy occasionally calls out blatant resellers and copycats, all through the enjoyable reading of jokes. Visiting Regretsy on a daily basis is a nice break (for me anyways) from the repetitive nature of the Etsy forums. (Think: Are view low today? How are my prices? Copycat alert!) While I also visit the Etsy Call Out blog, it’s lack of humor can bring ya down sometimes.
Needless to say, I would have never guessed that any of my items would be considered atrocious enough to be feature on the Regretsy blog. Boy, was I wrong.
Yesterday was what would have been Norma Jean’s (Marilyn Monroe’s) birthday, if she were still alive today. As a tribute, Regretsy featured several Etsy items depicting (or trying to depict anyway) the Hollywood celebrity that were found to be some of the most awful. My beaded tapestry was included.
I was not hurt or upset by the inclusion. I’ve always thought that tapestry was a little “off,” mostly because the pattern i designed for it was meant to be created with square delica beads, not the more rectangular toho seed beads. Either way though, unless I was going to go much larger in size, it’s not an easy task creating a realistic portrait on the human face using only two colors (black and white) and with my medium (beads!) The result looks like a pixelated, bitmap of an image. Not too bad, but certainly not a masterpiece, hence the reason I’m only asking for $24.95 for the hanging that took me close to a month to complete.
I happened to see the feature while quickly checking my Facebook before heading out to a birthday party. I’m a fan of Regresty’s page, so the post about the feature showed right up into my feed. I was in a hurry to leave for the part, but I had to check this s*#% out! Sure enough, there was my tapestry, top of the second column of featured Marilyn portraits. Was I upset? Nope. Super excited? Hell yes! I immediately left a handful of comments on how happy I was to be featured, and laughed along with the other members poking fun at the other pieces. The other members really appreciated my good sense of humor.
As of right now, Regretsy is my #1 referral site according to Google Analytics. I got almost 200 visits from them yesterday alone. I have received dozens of hearts, an invitation to April’s team, April’s Army, and, I sense, a lot more respect amongst the club of Whimsical Fuckery. Needless to say, I’m pretty stoked.
