My Birthday Sale Experiment

Striking Black Lace Earrings - $7

I decided to try an experiment on Etsy. Lots of successful sellers that post in the Etsy forums harp on the important of renewing, renewing, and renewing. No one can see you items if they aren’t at the front of the “most recent” list! True enough. But while a measly 20 cents may not seem like a whole lot of a renewing expense, it can quickly ring up after doing it several times a day / week / month. but, just to satisfy my curiosity as to how successful a strategy like that would apply to my own Etsy shop, I conducted an experiment with my Glamour365 shop. Because it was my birthday on the 23rd, I edited all prices of the items within the shop as 25% less and started all of my titles with “BIRTHDAY SALE 25 OFF – ” Pretty low prices is a good incentive, i thought, to draw some more people in. Especially if the sale is only for a single day.

Then, I renewed like crazy. Okay, maybe not too crazy, but still a lot more than I normally do. i started off the the morning renewing one item every 15 minutes, from the back of my store forward, then I switched to every half an hour, and then every hour until the end of the afternoon at 4:00 o’clock. i had to stoop then, because dammit, it was my birthday and I had plans to go out. ;-)

Strawberry Shortcake Slice Ring - $9.00

My results? about $11.00 in Etsy fees and 1 sale. the thing is though, the sale was an item I did not renew during my renewing frenzy, so I don’t know for sure if the renewing helped to bring the customer into my shop or not. And the sale was for 1 $16.00 necklace, so the profit margin was significantly slimmed.

I think my conclusion at this point is to focus more on adding more items, and less at desperately trying to stay on top of the Jewelry heap, which is close to impossible to do anyway. Perhaps, when I have 570 items in my shop, and not just 70, there will be more renewing that needs to be done anyway, as items expire, that sticking my 20 cents in the renewing slot machine won’t feel so much like a gamble.
