Reconsidering Valentine’s Day

I am aware that this is unusual, but I ♥ Valentine’s Day. I know, I know, aka: “Single Awareness Day.” I realize it’s the holiday that everyone loves to complain about. I am also aware that it is not a break holiday, so you don’t even get a stikin’ day off of work or school for it. But… hear me out.

Valentine’s Day has the BEST colors. Pink, yes, and RED. All that red holiday fashion you were wearing for Christmas? Here is your legit excuse to put it all back on again, just skip the green Christmas tree earrings.

Red Rope Necklace

Valentine’s day is a great excuse to eat CHOCOLATE. Do yourself a favor, if your partner asks if you want anything for Valentine’s Day, don’t you DARE say, “Oh, nothing.” FIRST of all, he will probably take you literally since, ya know, he’s not a mind reader. And SECONDLY, read the first sentence of this paragraph again. (It tastes even better when it’s a gift, therefore FREE.)

Chocolat Covered Strawberries from SweetCarolinaBakery

ANY excuse to buy some sexy under pieces is a good one in my book. Even if your version of “sexy” is heart-patterned boxer shorts, it’s still an excuse, right?

Valentine’s Day parties are more fun, dammit, if you ARE single. You can’t POSSIBLY be the ONLY single person you know. So stop feeling sorry for yourself and get all of your other single friends together to go to some parties. At one of my favorite Valentine’s Day parties, we hung dollar store undergarments all over the walls, and watched Rocky Horror Picture Show. I can’t imagine feeling somber while enjoying a day like that.

So have I convinced you yet? If not, don’t you worry, I’ll be sure to try again next year.

A “Just For Me” Treasury

So many treasuries so little time. I create a treasury usually every day. Some days I create several. There’s the work that goes into the treasury, and then there is even more work that goes into promoting it. It’s a lot of stinkin’ work. Not to mention all of the obligations. Because I am on several treasury teams, many require a certain number of treasuries every month featuring a certain number of members form the treasury team in each one that will “count.” One of the treasury teams I am a member of requires >>>>5<<<< treasuries a week with each one featuring at least 4 team member items. While others require just 1 a month with 4 to 8 member items, there is pressure to make a lot more than that, in order to ensure that I will be in their treasuries as well. So if I want to make a pretty blue treasury with butterflies, for example, then I try to fit as many team-member items as I can into that blue butterfly treasury from as many different teams as I can so that I can promote the same treasury within all of the teams to get the maximum amount of exposure, as well as fulfilling as many team requirements as I can with a single treasury. That's a lot of different factors to include, but it helps to eliminate so many choices, sometimes. Here is an example of a treasury I made this morning that fulfills a lot of team requirements: http://www.etsy.com/treasury/4d6beaa232bf6d91860563ef/a-regal-wedding-vintage-inspired

Sometimes I go complete opposite of the team treasuries and make Pounce treasuries in an effort to promote and share new sellers and discover what they have to offer. These can be way harder to promote than the team treasuries in order to get them noticed. A lot of the time the new sellers are unaware of the requirements that make a treasury "hot," so they'll thank me via convo but not leave a comment on the treasury itself, and forget to click or share it with others. This means that i have to spend a lot of time promoting the treasury in the chat room, appropriate forums, Facebook, Twitter, etc., just to try to get it more exposure than only having the featured artists seeing it. Like I said, a lot of work.

Whew. Once in awhile I jut want to make a treasury that features items I think are pretty and that’s it. You know? I don’t wan tot spend time promoting it or anything else, just making a treasury for a treasury’s sake and let that be the end of it. For once, I felt like making a treasury that i didn’t feel obligated to share all over the internet or fight all day long to try to get it to the top of page 1 via hotness level. Just a treasury. A pretty treasury with things that I like. Maybe some other people will stumble upon it and like it to. If that’s the case, so be it. This treasury wasn’t about promotion or networking, or teams, or new sellers. It’s just a treasury for the sake of a treasury. And you know what? It feels good.

Believe it or not, you can LIKE Valentine’s Day!

Heabdand - Now 25% off - $11.21

Yes. It’s true. I like Valentine’s Day. I even call it my favorite holiday! Yikes!!! Me = a weirdo, apparently. Valentine’s Day tend to be the holiday that everyone loves, but only in the sense that they love to HATE it. Being an occasion all about relationships, typically between lovers, it can be especially aggravating for single people. It’s understandably depressing going into the department stores and seeing aisles dedicated to heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and men standing in the express lines buying last-minute dozens of roses, when you know that there won’t be any waiting for you when you get home. So you crack jokes about it. You call it “heart-break day” or “vagina day” or whatever other slander you can think of. It helps to laugh at the “stupid” holiday because it makes it just a tad less depressing. Or maybe it doesn’t. Maybe it just makes you even more bitter over the dreaded day.

I’m going to take a moment and timidly attempt to convince you to stop hating the 14th of February. With any luck, I might give you enough ideas that you may actually like it.

There’s a bit of debate and disagreement about the origins of the holiday. Because there were three men of the church martyred, all named Valentine, and all on February 14th, it’s difficult to decide which one is the real one the holiday is named for. Rumor strongly has it that it was a bishop, who secretly married soldiers to their female lovers, against the decree of the Emperor (who thought that marriage was too much of an emotional strain and would make them less effective as soldiers.) From history.com: “According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first ‘valentine’ greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor’s daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed ‘From your Valentine,’ an expression that is still in use today.” There’s a lot of other theories as to the actual orgins of the celebration, but the above one I find the most romantic. And remember, we’re trying to LIKE this holiday.

Besides an excuse to be mushy and goochy-goo-y with your loved one (if you have one), there are lots of other reasons to grow fond Valentine’s Day. I know that one of the reasons I enjoy it so much is the color theme. First of all: RED! MY FAVORITE! Best. Color. EVER! Sure, you can wear red in the fall, and around Christmas time, but it starts to become a bit odd as spring begins to peak (well, for those that follow seasonal trends anyway- I wear red all year round despite the weather). Valentine’s day gives you an excuse to break out all of those red fashions and accessories for round 2! Plus, there is something irrepressibly sexy about this passionate shade. When wearing that slinky little black dress on your next night out, pair it with a sparkling red necklace or bangle bracelets and see if you can’t tell me you don’t feel instantly more attractive. Add a bold red lipstick, and I assure you, you will kissing your own image in the mirror. *wink*

Bracelet - 25% Off Sale - $9.00

Besides the [amazing] shade of red, Valentine’s Day is also known for its other dominant color: PINK. Now, now, suppress the groans. There are lots of ways to wear pink that don’t make you look like a 5-year-old. A light, soft shade of pastel pink makes any image instantly prettier and kinder to the eye. Add just a bit to a white ensemble for a delicate, feminine look, or pair a hot pink shade with heavy blacks to show off your punk-rock individuality. Basically, there are a lot more ways to embrace the color of femininity without touting a fluffy tutu. Unless, of course, you want to do so, then by all means.

Colors aside, the next best reason to like Valentines Day is this: CHOCOLATE. Need I say more? Even if you don’t have a significant other to snatch you up one of those heart shaped boxes, you’re sure to have a grandmother or aunt who will pick one up for you. If not, then I see no crime in buying yourself the treat. Feel free to indulge in the discounted boxes of dark chocolate, caramel truffles, and bars of milky love the day after V-Day, you can get more bang for your buck! There is no shame in this whatsoever. Besides, I’m pretty sure that I read somewhere that chocolate is good for you. If not physically, it is certainly good for the soul.

Earrings - 25% Off Sale - $3.71

Finally, if you are single, to avoid the most dreaded evening of the year: make it something to look forward to! Plan a day with your gaggle of other single girls and hit the town! LOTS of clubs will be hosting “singles mingle” parties where you get to dance, hang out, and get to know other singles. This is you night to have a good time. One year me and a bunch of my friends held a “Valentine’s Day Party” at our place, complete with heart decorations all over the walls and mounted undergarment visuals. This party included the battle of the sexes game, complete with a full viewing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. How’s THAT for a [non] romantic evening?!?

If you AREN’T single, but have a hard time getting your guy involved (or even getting him to remember to BUY that frikin box of chocolates), planning is of utmost importance. To make your day something to look forward to–not dread–don’t play the “Oh, you don’t have to get me anything” card. Just don’t do it. Even though you say you don’t care, you’ll be all mopey and pissy when the day comes. No wonder you both dread this day. Instead, agree on some thing small from each of you, say, no more than $10. THEN plan an outing, preferably something SOMEWHERE ELSE, and book a hotel room to go with. This works miracles in getting him excited and involved, TRUST ME. My man and I like to go to the nearby city, and book a suite with a hot tub in the room. If that doesn’t make your other half look forward to V-Day, then I don’t know what will. Find a hotel next to a local shopping market and some good places to eat, that way you’ll have some fun things to do together the next day before heading back to reality. Planning something like this every year, far enough in advance, will have you both looking forward to a wonderful trip spent together.

So have I helped at all? Do you feel any more partial towards Valentine’s Day? If so, or if not, let me know! I would love to hear your comments on this subject!

Incase you haven’t guess already, this is my favorite color…
