Friday’s Featured Seller: Wurde Sein Vintage Decor

Boy, oh, boy it has been a crazy busy week. Between craft fairs, shows, and custom orders, time has just been shooting by! however, it is once again Friday, and that means time for me to introduce you to a fabulous Etsy seller you may or may not have discovered yet. I’m excited to showcase a vintage seller this time around, and a pretty great example of a vintage shop at that. So without further ado…

Can you sum yourself up in 3 sentences? Give it a go!

Our little Etsy shop is called Wurde Sein [German for “To Be”]. We are long-time friends with a common interest in our love for vintage items of all shapes, sizes, colour and age. Working from home is a desire for both of us doing what we enjoy most, collecting and selling unique antique and vintage items.

Tell us about what you sell on Etsy:

We sell a wide variety of vintage and antique items such as kitchenware; housewares, furniture; and collectables. Here are some examples:

Kitchen items such as unique dishes from the 60’s and 70’s; chip n’ dip set; retro egg cups and coffee pots; salt and pepper shakers / spice shakers, such as:

We also sell a selection of vintage furniture such as a shelving unit; rustic-vintage folding “theatre” type chairs; old milking stools and ottomans:

We also carry a variety of vintage home décor items that can be incorporated with one’s modern style such as: lamps / lights; clock(s); vase(s); candle holders; etc. Here’s an example of one our favourite finds:

Last but not least, we offer collectables, such as bottles; vintage bells; other glassware, cigarette maker; etc. here’s one example, a glass table-top lighter that we have up for sale at the shop:

What is your favorite thing about collecting?

With respect to favourite thing about collecting, it’s literally the thrill of seeking and finding something unique. We love old items, we love anything antique and rustic, and every time we’re out looking for new inventory, it feels like Christmas when we find those “perfect” items!

Where do you find your inspiration?

Our inspiration comes from all different directions. Peers who enjoyed collecting and decorating their homes with that certain “rustic” theme was always a huge inspiration; following fellow bloggers and store owners with the same interests, etc. Wherever we can sniff it out we’ll be there! ;-)

Do you have any selling tips or tricks for other Etsy sellers?

We are still “wet behind the ears” when it comes to being shop owners and selling on Etsy; however, we feel fortunate that our efforts have been paying off fairly smoothly. The tips that we offer are everything we are incorporating daily into our routines with respect to making our business grow to be a successful one:

1. Take advantage of all the pictures slots Etsy offers and use up all five spaces; when people are looking at your items, they can’t hold them and feel them, therefore, they need to get a really good look at every angle possible.

2. Use all 13 tags up with descriptive words for your item, this assists buyers finding your item through searching key words;

3. Fix your titles and descriptions to be accurate, descriptive, and spelling-mistake free!

4. Join teams – get to know other sellers and buyers out there and promote your items on the team discussions everyday;

5. Be prompt with answering emails and inquiries;

6. Try your best to please the buyer without selling yourself short – offer combined shipping and special discounts for certain circumstances;

7. Find bloggers to help you out! ;-) Offer contest give-aways to help buyers find your shop;

8. Have clear photos, they do not have to be professional; however, a little time and effort can go a long way;

9. Stay consistent with photos to have as much of a professional look as possible;

10. Promote promote promote!
a. Use teams to promote your items;
b. Favourite other shops and their items to help a little traffic come your way;
c. Add people to your circle so they may add you if your shop interests them;
d. Create Treasuries to get your name out there (we have yet to master this!);

11. Stop checking your store every 2 minutes, this will drive you mad! – Checking it a few times a day is one thing; a few times every 5 minutes is another, this may discourage you if you don’t see activity happening every time you refresh the page; and

12. Last but not least, don’t give up, patience and persistence will go a long way.

**** A Huge THANK YOU to WurdeSein for their awesome interview responses and for sharing their wonderful vintage shop with us! ****

Friday’s Featured Artist: Meet Nadine of MidnitePineCreations

And now for round 2! I promised this would become a reliable tradition, didn’t I? This Friday I am going to introduce you to Nadine, the wonderful crafter and shop owner of MidnitePineCreations. If you’re sick of the boring children’s bedding selections at department stores, I urge you to check out her shop. She has some absolutely AMAZING fleece bedding for cribs, toddlers, & then some! Check out her interview below to learn more.

Can you sum yourself up in 3 sentences? Give it a go!
-I have been a firefighter, paramedic, critical care nurse, pizza delivery girl, valet, bartender, in my pre-mom life…now…
-I am a SAHM of 2 toddlers, who mommies during the day and sews fleece bedding for children at night.
-Starting my own business is challenging, but I have finally found something that fills me with such excitement and passion that I don’t mind the exhaustion and sore muscles that pulling my all nighters bring me.

Tell us about what you sell on Etsy:
I create Fleece Bedding for Children(mostly) and older adults. Sizes range from Pack-N-Play fitted sheets/sets, BUG HUGS, and blankets to Twin sized Bedding Sets for children, college bound kids, and older adults.

"Owls at Midnight" Fleece Baby/Toddler Blanket - $40

"Owls at Midnight" Fleece Baby/Toddler Blanket - $40

What is your favorite thing about creating?
My favorite thing is hearing back from my buyers that their baby had their first full nights sleep on my sheets….or that a mom can’t get her toddler to let go of the sheet so that it can be put on the bed…that they are carrying it and snuggling it like a blanket…or the mom of teenage boys who has told me that her boys now refuse to sleep on cotton bedsheets anymore because they love their pirate bed sets so much….or that the purchase of my fitted end blankets have made “making the Bunk Beds” in the morning unbelievably easy compared to the neck breaking chore it used to be….

Where do you find your inspiration?
My children are my inspiration…I wanted to give them something better than what was available in the stores…and since I couldn’t find it- I made it. And then, I wanted to help out my friends and family…and then it just snowballed…

Thanks to Nadine for sharing! Wish her good luck and hopes for a prospering business of growth in the creative world!

Meet Friday’s Featured Artist

Traditions are fun. They are something that can usually be counted on and granted excited anticipation (think Christmas) or they can be scary (think Shirley Jackson’s, The Lottery.) I decided, in about the amount of time it takes for me to bite into a pop tart, that I need to start a tradition or two right here on this blog. For without further ado, I give you Featured Fridays. Every Friday we’ll get to know an awesome Etsy shop owner and what she or he sells to boot. It’ll be great fun, and a great chance to get to know some shops on Etsy you may not have thought to visit before.

Meet the owner of ThatSingularAnomaly

I’m going to start the feature off with ThatSingularAnomaly. Today is the shop owner’s 21st birthday. So…. it’s kind of a big deal! Read all about this fabulous birthday girl and give her shop some delectable birthday attention of which it deserves!

Can you sum yourself up in 3 sentences? Give it a go!
I am a half-Thai, half-American college student that deals with (not “suffers from”) Bipolar Disorder. I have four published novels under the name Donaya Haymond, with more to follow, and I turn 21 on October 7. I love helping others, crochet, fencing, singing, and haunting Regretsy.

Tell us about what you sell on Etsy:
I sell soft and colorful wearable items I have crocheted, with a strong emphasis on fingerless gloves – I have had a passion for them since I was 15 and have a collection of over twenty machine-made pairs, along with of course a bunch of handmade.

Blue and Brown Fingerless Gloves - $15.00

Blue and Brown Fingerless Gloves - $15.00

What is your favorite thing about creating?
The enthusiasm people seem to have for my little crafty efforts, and when I know someone’s life has been brightened by my sold or donated work.

Where do you find your inspiration?
I love to peruse multicolored yarns on Etsy and at craft stores, and I also think of what my avatar, Neil Gaiman’s character Delirium from the Sandman graphic novel series would like to wear.

Blue Vegan Mittens - $18.00

Do you have any selling tips or tricks for other Etsy sellers?
Join a team and participate enthusiastically. Invest in a professional banner. Have fun with it.

Thanks to ThatSingularAnomaly for sharing! Let us know what you think of the feature because, like every great tradition, you can expect more where that came from!

Farewell to Etsy Chat

One of my long-time favorite time-wasters (some call it networking, but let’s be honest here) is Etsy Chat. When I first started selling on Etsy chat was happening place. There would be at least 2 “talk-about-whatever” chat rooms, a couple of teams hosting their password-protected chat-a-thons, and a full-scaled Featured Seller Game chat room, packed with sellers waiting in line for their chance to get into the full room.

Blue Eye Ring - $8.95

Things have changed since then. With the revamping of the community page to generate more focus towards Teams, the link to the chat rooms was hidden in the second or third paragraph, easily passed over by the casual on-looker. It’s new link location quickly affected the number of people entering the rooms. Featured Seller games died off. Occasionally an old player would open up a room and hope it would attract enough sellers to get some good games going. This was a rare occurrence, and sales were hard to achieve. Even the regular, talk-about-whatever-you-want chat rooms were rarely to full capacity, and even when they were, several of the members were inactive and would slowly gray out unto the little hamster gave ‘em the boot.

Because of these reasons, Etsy administration can say that the chat rooms are “hardly being used.” Which is true. If you believe, as I do, that if they were easier to find they would be utilized more, then it’s too late to push this theory. They have made their decision.

Digital Collage Sheet - $1.99

Digital Collage Sheet - $1.99

In a lot of respects the decision makes sense. With so many people using their smart phone and iPads to access the internet, phasing out all Flash-based application is a logical step. Not the mention all of the bugs and issues the servers experience with Flash. The virtual labs, which I love, were starting to become sessions filled with trying to get the sound and video to come through probably. Not the best way to conduct shop critiques. So while I am sad to see these applications go, I do understand the reasoning behind them.

I am not too hopeful that adequate replacements will take their places in the near future (new alchemy, anyone?) but I suppose that’s just my inner pessimist doing the writing. With Friday being the deadline to have chat removed, there isn’t much else we can say or do at this point but wave farewell. So long Etsy chat, it’s been fun.
