What I’m Watching Now

As some of you may know, I’m too cheap to pay for a means of television. I watch what I can get off of hulu for free. Not everything is available there, hence the reason you will not find The Walking Dead on this list. It would be, but I have to wait until the whole seasons can be bought in full. (As of now, I’ve only seen the first season, so no spoilers please!) This list consists of my recommendations via what I like to play on my laptop while working on making pretty jewelry for you!

Once Upon A Time
Is it just me, or is this show only getting BETTER and BETTER? I know, I sound like a gushing fan girl, but when it comes to this ABC drama, I AM a gushing fan girl! I just can’t get enough. I love the twists on the fairy tale characters that I wouldn’t have thought of (anyone else shocked by the surprise ending of the Red Riding Hood episode?) This show manages to make so many one-dimensional characters come to full 3-dimensional life (even the little fairies, and conscience-minding crickets have back-stories and conflicts of their own!) Easily my favorite show rigtht now, and I highly recommend it.

Grimm
My other fairy-tale lush favorite. Some of the episodes are predictable (the female spider one), but most keep you on the edge of your seat with a fierce urgency for the next to arrive. The BEST character is the side-kick, a reformed blu-bod, a now-vegetarian who frequently helps Detective Griffen and sometimes even ends up saving the day. It’s clear he’s bitter about not being appreciated enough, but he good-naturally continues to lend a helping hand and an open friendship.

Smash
This new show is about two of my absolute favorite things in ONE. (1) Broadway musicals. (2) Marilyn Monroe. Can you say HECK YES!? All of the great things about Glee are in this show: fantastical musical numbers, heartfelt relationships and friendship issues, and drama. There’s a little bit too much sexy-time, and the show sometimes slopes off into the arena of soaps, but the incredible song and dance numbers more than make up for it. Plus, one of my favorite things about it is that there isn’t really a clear-cut “bad guy.” The two main female characters vying for the role of Marilyn want it equally bad, and you can sympathize and vouch for them both at the same time. I love it when a show does this because it’s so much harder to pull off.

Awake
A man (yes, another homicide detective) gets in a car crash with his wife and son. Ever since, whenever he wake up from sleeping he is transferred to a separate reality. in one, his son is alive but not his wife, and in the other, it’s the opposite. He has no idea which is the reality and which is the dream. Both seem equally real, and evidence compiles into both their possibility. Eventually he starts to see parallels in both of the realities and plays off of them in his cases to his advantage. The audience is never led to believe in one reality over the other, and the plot dynamic is fascinating.

New Girl
Okay, so this show is pretty much surface junk and a guilty pleasure for chuckles. But it continues to make me laugh, especially the one scene when Nick attempts to cut his own hair. I laughed out-frikin-LOUD:

Modern Family
This show is impossible not to love. There can be a little too much couple-bickering from time to time, but the moments of hilarity more than make up for it (unlike the Middle, where there is just TOO much fighting I have a hard time watching more than an episode.)

The Usual NBC Line-Up
Parks & Rec, The Office (although quality has taken a plunge, I’m still hopeful they can pick things back up again, at least partially), Up All Night, Whitney, Community, and 30 Rock. If you’ve never seen an episode of 30 Rock, I suggest you start with the Leap Day episode. OMG, soooo funny. This show can be a bit much for me from time to time, but this episode sold me. Also, I know Whitney gets a lot of flack, but I still think its funny enough for background noise. They are guilty of allowing too-important of events (such as big breakups) to happen off screen, but the characters of Alex and Mark make up for it.

What are YOU watching right now? Any recommendations for me?
