How to Make Your Etsy Shop Visually Appealing

My MegansBeadedDesigns Etsy shop is pretty eclectic looking, even though its a shop of all beadwoven items. When items are listed by the “Most Recent” default setting, things can look a tad on the messy side. Not every Etsy shop has this problem. In fact, I don’t worry much about it with my Glamour365 shop or my MegansCreativeDesign shop. Their pictures go well enough together without having to be remodeled. However, if your shop is anything like my MegansBeadedDesigns shop, then you too may benefit from a little color coordination.

BEFORE:

Yikes. Kinda scary looking right? Wayyyyy too many colors together like that makes an on-looker’s eyes jump all over the place, unsure of what to rest on.

Because of my multitudes of colors, I opted to organize my shop not by item type, but hue. All I had to do was go to Your Shop > Options (under the Shop Settings menu) > Rearrange your Shop (Select “Enabled”). After the setting has been changed, I can click on “Rearrange my Shop” from my shop homepage, dragging and dropping items wherever I please. It’s pretty magical, really.

AFTER:

Ahhhhhhhhhh. MUCH better! From here I can feature my top 4 items as a theme, or simply of a different color combination than what shows on my first page of items. This way, I am constantly bringing up certain items right to the front without having to completely rearrange my color combinations every few days. The only annoying thing about rearranging your shop to a customized display is that you will have to RE-rearrange an item every time to renew it, because it will appear right at the front each time. A little annoyance I’m willing to put up with, however, for such a cleaner-looking storefront!

Quick and Easy Hair Styles with Barrettes

When my alarm clock goes off in the morning I think to myself, albeit a tad incoherently, “Boooooooooo! I wanna keep sleeping!!!”

So I hit the snooze button.

About 5 minutes later the alarm clock goes off again. It’s evil intentions of bursting me from my delightful slumber entirely apparent. So I take revenge on the wicked device by hitting the snooze button, AGAIN. AND AGAIN. Take THAT stupid alarm clock!!!

Oh, crap. I have to be leave for work in 30 minutes.

I wish I could say that the above routine is not a common occurrence, but the truth is, it happens just about EVERY FREAKING DAY. I have to take what I time I have left to get dressed, put my face on, and quickly run a brush through my hair. Fiddling with a curling iron, straightener, or crimper? Entirely out of the question. There just isn’t enough time.

However, I still want to look professional and do SOMETHING with my hair before I step out the door. My quick, easy solution is to stick a barrette in it. By simply grabbing a couple of pieces of hair and combining them with a hair clip, I can achieve instant styling gratification. Best of all, the procedure takes less than a minute. I’m off to work looking fabulously, and no one can tell how quickly I had to rush to be there on time.

There’s actually quite a few options for hair styles with barrettes. Here’s just one of the cool tutorials I’ve found on YouTube:

If your looking for some unique barrettes to add to your collection (or want to start a collection) I’ve been adding quite a few new ones to my Etsy Shop:

Holiday Wrap-Up (Or, I guess, Unwrap?)

If you are one of those families that can fit all of their Christmas festivities into the 25th of December, surely you are aware of the rarity that you are. The rest of us don’t have a Christmas DAY, it’s more like a Christmas WEEK (give or take a day or two.) Fitting all of the activities into one day would be like trying to fit an entire zoo into a Prius. It just ain’t gonna happen.

I don’t mind. This way the fun and excitement spreads itself out. It means several days in which I get to pack on the pounds by stuffing my face with frosted sugar cookies and gulping down eggnog. I tell myself I’ll work the pounds off later (which will never actually happen.) It also means spending adequate amounts of time with different groups of friends and family. Some of which I only get to see during this time of year.

Because of our work schedules we had to do some flipping around of what we would normally do on days before and after Christmas. My husband had to work on Christmas eve (Booooooo!), so we headed out to see my Grandparents the day prior. My Aunt and Uncle who recently moved to Hawaii were there, so they got to brag bout how nice it is to live in a climate where the weather is always perfect. It was nice that they came up so we got to see them.

My husband and I did our mini-Christmas the morning of Christmas eve, before he left for work. Although many women out there would claim differently, I have to state that my husband is the most amazing there is in the world. He got me a new car stereo (which I have been dying for for AGES!) Oh, Mr. Zombie, you have never sounded so good! So that was pretty awesome. After he got off of work later that evening we headed out to his parents house to spend the night.

Christmas was magical, as always. Santa stuffed our stockings full of goodies and presents and wrapping paper abounded. Dinner was amazing and The Christmas Story every bit as funny as it was last year. Another perfect holiday to finish off a pretty much perfect year.

The next day we headed to my older sister’s for a Christmas brunch with her family and some other members of her extended family. My husband got to see her new house for the first time, so that was cool. We still have yet another Christmas this week with some of our close friends (pretty excited), and then it’s on to the New Year’s celebration. Can’t believe it’s already going to be two-thousand-and-frikin-twelve. (STILL no flying cars!!?!? WTH!?!) I’ll have to think of some resolutions here pretty quick.

How were your holiday celebrations? Feel free to one-up me in the comments below!

Welcoming WINTER

Today is the official day the season of winter begins.

I know this because my little desktop planner/calendar tells me so. Hence, it MUST be true. (To argue would be sacrilege.)

Where I’m at in Eastern WA, winter tends to start a little earlier (like, early November earlier), and stick around just a tad past it’s welcome. (Snow in May is sooooo NOT COOL!) But this year has been an exception. We haven’t had much snow (yet), and the temperature has been fairly decent, considering. The lack of white stuff all over everything makes it feel weird that Christmas is only 3 days away.

Well, hello CHRISTMAS. Please, look the other way while I quickly decorate my tree and finish wrapping presents. I wasn’t expecting you so soon!

Besides Christmas, there’s a lot of other things to look forward to during the winter season. There’s New Years eve parties (in which wearing a gown entirely made of sequins is considered acceptable – count me in), fashionable faux/vintage fur coats, winter sports, hot chocolate (don’t forget the peppermint flavored marshmallows!), and most importantly: BOOTS (aka: the loves of my life).

So while you’re freezing your arhse off trying to shovel away the ice-chunk filled snow from your thousand-mile long driveway, sobbing over your heating bill, or battling the long lines at department stores to submit a return item, think of these happy things. Besides, winter’s only here for 6 months out of the year, so you might as while enjoy it when it’s around! X-)

Imagine a World where Everyone is Physically Beautiful

You know how book-selling sites like to recommend books and authors based on what you’ve read/bought form them before? Normally I ignore such recommendations. Mostly because these sites seem to think that Dean Koontz is akin to Stephen King. No. Not even close. King SHOWS and Koontz TELLS. (That’s all I have to say about that for the moment.) But for once I went ahead and tried out a recommendation. It was: Like The Hunger Games? Try Uglies.

So I read opted to read Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld. The author’s pacing is a bit fast. Okay, it’s really fast. But considering that the novels are geared for youth I think it makes sense. You won’t get bored reading these books, that’s for sure. The action and plot movement is basically non-stop, and the world Westerfeld creates becomes entirely believable despite it’s fantastical premise.

The story takes place in the future. After civilization basically implodes on itself and nearly destroys the earth. In order to protect the earth, everyone lives in cities where nearly everything is recycled. Everyone is also very closely watched by their cities wardens to prevent mischief from going too far. Something else is different in this future world, in this world, everyone gets an operation when they turn 16 which makes them “Pretty.” They teach the younger kids (called “Uglies”) in school about what the world was like before the operation. A world in which people were judged by how they were born looking like. How some people got better jobs and better pay just because they were better looking. Also, way back when, some people were even killed jut because their skin was a different color. The solution? Everyone is made pretty at 16. No one has an advantage over anyone else. Everyone is made the same.

The main character of the novel, Tally, looks forward to her operation eagerly. For all of her young life, she has been taught that her physical appearance is biologically inferior. She focuses on her imperfections, and fantasizes of the day they will be removed and corrected through surgery. She is the youngest in her group of friends so she is basically left alone when they go on to become Pretty.

Then she meets Shay. Shay doesn’t want to become pretty. She tries to convince Tally to run away with her into the wild, where they can meet up with other runaways and make a life without the operation. Tally declines, but is later forced to run away to find Shay anyway. The government manipulates her into betraying the runaways or she won’t be able to get her operation.

While in the encampment of the runaways, Tally finds out the truth of the operation. The surgeons do much more than alter the physical appearance of the 16-year-olds’ bodies, they also plant legions into their brains to basically stupefy the population into submission. With her new-found knowledge, Tally joins the side of the rebellion. From then on, the battle for freedom from the city authorities magnifies, reaching nearly impossible odds.

In the first book of the series, Tally is an Ugly. In the second book, she has to give herself up and become a Pretty to help see if the cure for the brain legions will work. She has to cope with having a hazy brain and feeling like there is nothing wrong with her at all. Except, maybe figuring out which dress to wear to the next party. Then, her old friends from the wild give her the cure – and everything in Pretty-ville gets knocked upside down.

Having demonstrated her ability to succeed in the first and second book, the city government makes the logical decision to recruit Tally (by force) to join their operation. In the third book of the series, Specials, Tally receives a few alterations of her body and brain, she becomes a member of their elite police force, known as Special Circumstances (kind of like the future CIA.) She is designed specifically to keep the Uglies from rebellion and keep the Pretties bubble-heads.

It seems like the series concludes with the third book, but Westerfeld has in fact written a fourth edition, entitled Extras. I wasn’t going to snatch it up until I read it’s summary, “One of the features of the new world is that everyone has a “feed,” which is basically their own blog/myspace/tv channel. The ratings of your feed (combined with how much the city interface overhears people talking about you) determines your social status–so everyone knows at all times how famous they are. As Scott Westerfeld explored the themes of extreme beauty in the first three Uglies books, now he takes on the world’s obsession with fame and popularity. And how anyone can be an instant celebrity.”

Okay. That sounds awesome. So I’m off to read “Extras” and finish off the series. I’ll let you know if it’s as awesome as it sounds!

Overcoming Shyness for the Sake of Word-of-Mouth Promotion

I’m shy. I’m an introvert. I’m a listener, not a talker. A reader, not a speaker. A thinker, not a babbler. You get the idea.

I’m working on it.

It’s a constant battle for improvement. Extroverts have a hard time understanding it. They are easily friendly conversationalists, who hardly feel awkward in social or business situations. They can naturally be themselves and not be afraid of saying the wrong thing or caring even if they do. The extroverts dominate the business meetings, for better or for worse, and tend to reap the benefits of their exuberant personalities. In the professional world, basting in the spotlight can be a good thing. Avoiding it, as I tend to do, can result in professional stagnation.

I’ve gotten a lot better. I’m still referred to as “the quiet one” at work, but not because I don’t speak up when I need to. I may not blab a lot for the sake of filling the air with conversation, but I am better about saying what needs to be said, and responding to an already existing conversation–therefore establishing a presence. I still feel like I need to work harder than the extroverts, and allow my work to speak for me (hoping that my bosses notice.) But a lot of progress has been made from the girl who was occasionally accused of being a mute in high school.

I still need to work harder on it though. Especially when it comes to promoting my handmade business in face-to-face situations.

What happens in reality:

Observer: What a cute barrette! Did you make it?

My Response: Thank you! I did.

*The conversation ends.*

What SHOULD happen:

Flower Hair Clip - $14.95

Observer: What a cute barrette! Did you make it?

My response: Thank you! Yes I did! I have lots more too! You can see see them in my online Etsy shop. Here’s my business card. I also do special orders, so if there is something that you would like in differentiate colors or in a different design, you can let me know.

Observer: Thanks! *takes card*

The worst thing that could happen is the example observer will throw my card away and never visit my shop. Which would, of course, be no different from the conversation prior in which I never mentioned it. On the plus side, he or she might actually visit my shop, share it with someone else, and increase my possibilities of drumming up business.

Conclusion? Overcoming shyness pays off.

Ways I can work to overcome it:

  1. Wear my product
  2. Always carry business cards
  3. Encourage those I talk to to share my shop with someone else. (e.g. “If you’re not the jewelry-wearing type, maybe you know someone who would appreciate a place where she can get some.”)

This is all a lot harder than it appears on paper. The internet is my safe zone. I don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed asking my friends to come see my stuff at a craft fair on Facebook, but in real life, especially with complete strangers, it takes a lot more effort than one would think. Hopefully, with preparation and practice, I’ll get better at face-to-face promotion.

Do you struggle with shyness? If so, how do you deal with it?

Meet Dena from A Piece of Paradise, Friday’s Featured Artist

Meet Dena from A Piece of Paradise

Can you sum yourself up in 3 sentences? Give it a go!
I am an artist, illustrator, and mother of two crazy little girls. I was born in Canada and now live in California. I love the color yellow, sunshine, and working until the wee hours of the morning.

Tell us about what you sell on Etsy:
I sell framed and ready to hang original paintings. Most are in oil, but occasionally I will post a watercolor. Landscapes and still life are my usual subjects although I am working on some modern art as well. Each painting is created with quality artist materials that will last for many years.

Painting of Autumn Trees: Sisters 9x12 - $97

What is your favorite thing about creating/collecting?
I love connecting with my buyers. The best part is the satisfaction I get when someone decides that one of my paintings is exactly what they have been looking for. Each person is as unique as their reason for buying art. I’ve had people buy my paintings as gifts for loved ones, for their own homes, and even because of their individual religious beliefs.

Original Portrait Painting - $200

Where do you find your inspiration?
Everywhere! The sights I see, my family, and my faith are where I collect my inspiration. The idea that one of my paintings could lift someone’s spirits or add to the personality of their home are what drive me to create my paintings. Nothing could be better than knowing that my artwork brings enjoyment to others.

Do you have any selling tips or tricks for other Etsy sellers?
It’s all about photos. I see a lot of shops with fantastic photos, and those are the ones that get noticed! The best photos have personality and show the product in context. I’m always working on improving my own photos.

Grunge LDS Prophet Name Art - $16

Concluding the Craft Fair Season

*Whew!* I am glad I can finally allow myself to exhale. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been fun. But it’s also been a LOT OF WORK. I finished my final craft fair of the holiday season last Saturday. For the last time, at least for awhile, I packed up up my ten THOUSAND pound tables and shoved them into the small trunk of my little car. I bagged up my necklaces so they wouldn’t tangle with one another (as if they are made of nothing but magnets, I swear!) I couldn’t help but think, “Thank goodness no more of THIS for awhile!”

The craft fairs I have participated in this fall/winter season have been great learning experiences. I am pretty sure which ones I will be wanting to attend next year, and which ones I think I would rather skip. Some were better organized than others, and some better advertised than others. Some were, quite frankly, more worthy of their booth fee than others.

My final show, out at Opportunity Christian Fellowship in Spokane Valley, was a less-than-satisfactory show. If not for a couple of last minutes purchases just before closing time, I wouldn’t have even made back my 25 dollar booth fee. I reminded myself that the networking opportunities made it worth my while anyway, but I think I only passed out less than a half a dozen of my business cards. I hardly think that very much actual networking occurred.

Despite the recent disappointment, I haven’t given up on craft fairs altogether. The good ones have made them all more than worth it. I’ve been happy for the person-to-person interaction they provided. Hopefully more custom orders and online sales will result! (Crossing fingers, toes, legs, arms, etc.!)

I’m also hoping to look into some consignment deals and gallery showings. I had kind of given up on such arrangements for awhile. The last few locations I sold at went out of business when the recession hit. Fortunately I think I’m getting over the shell-shock. I think I could manage to gather the courage to approach some brick & mortar stores after the Christmas season; maybe a few of them would be willing to work out some deals. I’ll keep you posted if anything goes live!

In the meantime, I’m going to focus on selling online from my Etsy shops. New items will be eagerly added daily as I create away and post the things that didn’t sell at the craft fairs. Here’s a quick preview of some of the new headbands I’ve been adding, more will follow!
