It’s Coat Wearin’ Time

I’ve been featured in a handful of lovely treasuries this morning. White on white seems to be the theme… most likely because the weather is getting chilling out there (freezing in fact, where I am) and they signify the need to put on that extra layer and then some. This one in particular I found to be exceptionally pretty, thanks to Lee from RockStoneTreasures!

The Cost of Being TOO Nice

When it comes to running a businesses, or TRYING to run a business anyway, one is generally seeking a profit. To make money. To put food on the table. To, basically, come out ahead. Sometimes, being the nice guy/gal can get in the way of that. This is lesson I am learning first hand. Allow me to explain….

Vintage Fashion Models 18 x 25 Collage Sheet - $1.99

All of us who run small businesses, whether it be at a local Brick & Mortar store, or an online shop, want to offer the BEST customer service possible. We want the people who buy from us to be ultimately happy with their purchases, as well as with their experience. We hope that they will share with the world how wonderful our store is. Good customer service is an essential ingredient to building a loyal customer base, and can result in spreading the word to bring in new customers. It can, however, go too far sometimes.

Case in point. I’ve had a couple of packages get lost in the mail. Not lost, necessarily, but sent to the wrong address. They were sent to the wrong address because the customers who ordered from me accidentally gave me their old addresses, and because they matched up on PayPal and Etsy, I sent it dutifully. A couple weeks later I get a convo from the customers asking, “Where is my package?” When I double-check the address they say, “Oops.” Wanting to be the all-satisfactory-customer-service-seller, I offer to remake the item and sell it at a discount of half the price -or- if they are willing to wait a couple of weeks in case their package is returned to me, I will resend to their new address at no extra shipping charge to them. Either way, I’m going to lose money on the deal.

From now on, I send a copy of the buyer’s address in their “Thank you for your purchase!” convo right after a sale, that way, if they have changed addresses, they will hopefully alert me of the change before the item is shipped the next day.

I could easily have continued to lose a lot of money if I kept doing what I was doing when these buyers made such errors. Not exactly the best way to make money. Even though it’s hard for those of us who strive to be “nice,” it’s OKAY to ask for additional shipping charges if a customer had their package sent to the wrong address, or to leave them out of the shipping charges if they want to send the item back for a refund. You may get the item back, but you don’t want to be out of the cost it took you to ship it. (Unless the item is broken or an other such circumstance, in which case a complete full refund would be the only acceptable thing to do.) Basically, customers EXPECT such additional charges, and they won’t completely turn away from you simply trying to adequately run your business.

Halloween party

Halloween party

So I feel pretty Halloweened out already. Haha. This past weekend was a Halloween-Bash bananza. On Thursday night we went to Silverwood Theme park over in Idaho for their Scarywood Halloween special. One of the best Haunted houses (The Blood Bayou) I’d seen in a long time! They did an awesome job. Oh, and there is the zombie express, which means we got to ride a train that was being chased by zombies. What could be more awesome than being chased by zombies? I can’t think of much. Then on Friday we got all prettied-up in our Halloween costumes for the first party of the season. Late into the night we sported too-high heels and obnoxious wigs. Totally worth it though. Everyone thought my eye make-up was pretty rad and asked how long it took me. I was pretty prideful in being able to say, only about 30 minutes. Heck yes. We followed all of this with a visit to the Amazing Corn Maze the following day. It poured buckets of rain on us and was freezing as hell, but all worth it to be part of the Halloween experience.

Halloween isn’t over yet though! Still got one more week to enjoy the festivities. I think I’ll slow down a bit on big celebratory events, but that doesn’t mean I won’t continue to read spooky books and pop in the horror films of my choice. (LOVE scary movies!) Here’s a list of the some of the books I have read/listened to, the movies I recommend if you want something to curl up on the couch to and hide your face in your pillow during some of the very scary parts. Also, a few accessories that make the boring days at the office have some festive fun.

Scary Movie 4It, by Stephen King A Dirty Job, by Christopher Moore

Scary Movie 4
– The funniest of the spoof movies yet! No matter how many times I watch this movie, it makes me crack up every time!
It, by Stephen King – One of the BEST scary reads sure to keep you up late at night with the flashlight on
A Dirty Job, by Christopher Moore – a quirky, humorous story about a beta male who finds himself in the position of being death. Full of lots of laughs and underworld demons, what could be better?

Gravedancers Full Dark No Stars, by Stephen King Pet Sematary

Gravedancers – an oober-scary horror flick with plenty of scenes that will make you jump out of your seat and have your rooting for the heroes. Great fro late-night cuddling with lots of popcorn!

Full Dark No Stars, by Stephen King – Can you tell I'm a huge Stephen King fan? Even though i love just about everything he's written, I do have to say that this is a collection of some of his best work. These stories are somewhat painful to read, but excellently written, and every sentence feels very real and true. I highly recommend.

Pet Sematary – If you are one of those complainers (like me) who thinks that today's scary movies simply aren't scary anymore, then do not be afraid to go back to this oldie but goodie. By far one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, this one is sure to stick in your head long after the credits roll. Just as a good horror flick should!

Have your own recommendations? Feel free to leave them in the comments section! I’d love to see what they are!

Grasping for the Halloween Spirit

I don’t know why, but I’m having trouble getting into the Halloween spirit. This is usually not that difficult for me, Halloween is easily the most fun holiday to decorate for (and dress up for). Not being allowed to celebrate it growing up due to my parents’ over-bearing religious tendencies, I’ve embraced the October festivities with full-force since departing from the household I grew up in. Maybe the rebelliousness is just starting to wear off?

Drop of Blood Necklace - $18.00

Or maybe working for a costume store last year ruined it for me. It did last year, I’ll tell you that right now. I was working at this Halloween store every day after getting off work from my day job at 4. We would close at midnight or later the closer it got to Halloween, and all of the last-minute costume shoppers would squeeze themselves into stripper outfits three-times too small and fling the closest pumpkin outfit on their child to call it good. Needless to say chasing down the shop lifters and helping to zip-up one too many skimpy outfits at the fitting rooms was a bit much. I came home exhausted, with the Monster Ball jingle stuck in my head. I was Halloweened-out. I did not attend a single Halloween party, so it didn’t matter that I got that awesome 25% employee discount on costumes, I sure as hell wasn’t going to get the chance to wear any of them.

So needless to say, when the manager of said Halloween shop asked me if I would work for him again this year, I politely turned him down. I wanted to have fun with Halloween this year. Working at a Halloween store was too much of a Halloween overload, and not in a good way. Now I just need to get out of the funk and get excited about the fact that I’ll actually have the time to attend some events and parties in costume and everything. My husband is already there. He’s been slaving away making a costume replica of his character in the Fallout 3 video game. He’s gone so far as burying articles of clothing underground and digging them up days later–so they look good and weathered. He’s painted a Nerf

gun and filled it with weights so it’s good and heavy, and sliced up bits of tire to use as armor. Needless to say, I feel pretty lame when people ask me, “Who are you gonna be?” and I respond, “Uhm, well, I have an Eve costume I’m thinking of using for a Poison Ivy costume…” Pretty lame, right?

Well this week I’m going to Scarywood over at Silverwood theme park in Idaho, and hitting up my first Halloween party on Friday night. Hopefully between those two events, the fact that my husband has put up our outdoor decorations, I’ll manage to get into the spirit. We’ll also be carving our our pumpkins this week. Now… just what to carve…

Yummy, yummy cider

Considering just how frikin’ cold it is this morning, discovering I had been placed in this treasury this morning warmed my heart. Which is a wonderful feeling, despite my fingers being almost too numb to type this.

Friday’s Featured Artist: Meet Nadine of MidnitePineCreations

And now for round 2! I promised this would become a reliable tradition, didn’t I? This Friday I am going to introduce you to Nadine, the wonderful crafter and shop owner of MidnitePineCreations. If you’re sick of the boring children’s bedding selections at department stores, I urge you to check out her shop. She has some absolutely AMAZING fleece bedding for cribs, toddlers, & then some! Check out her interview below to learn more.

-I have been a firefighter, paramedic, critical care nurse, pizza delivery girl, valet, bartender, in my pre-mom life…now…
-I am a SAHM of 2 toddlers, who mommies during the day and sews fleece bedding for children at night.
-Starting my own business is challenging, but I have finally found something that fills me with such excitement and passion that I don’t mind the exhaustion and sore muscles that pulling my all nighters bring me.

Tell us about what you sell on Etsy:
I create Fleece Bedding for Children(mostly) and older adults. Sizes range from Pack-N-Play fitted sheets/sets, BUG HUGS, and blankets to Twin sized Bedding Sets for children, college bound kids, and older adults.

"Owls at Midnight" Fleece Baby/Toddler Blanket - $40

"Owls at Midnight" Fleece Baby/Toddler Blanket - $40

What is your favorite thing about creating?
My favorite thing is hearing back from my buyers that their baby had their first full nights sleep on my sheets….or that a mom can’t get her toddler to let go of the sheet so that it can be put on the bed…that they are carrying it and snuggling it like a blanket…or the mom of teenage boys who has told me that her boys now refuse to sleep on cotton bedsheets anymore because they love their pirate bed sets so much….or that the purchase of my fitted end blankets have made “making the Bunk Beds” in the morning unbelievably easy compared to the neck breaking chore it used to be….

Where do you find your inspiration?
My children are my inspiration…I wanted to give them something better than what was available in the stores…and since I couldn’t find it- I made it. And then, I wanted to help out my friends and family…and then it just snowballed…

Thanks to Nadine for sharing! Wish her good luck and hopes for a prospering business of growth in the creative world!

My Etsy Search Ad Results

A couple of weeks ago Etsy introduced Etsy Search Ads. Basically, at the top of most general searches, instead of having a row of “Recently Listed” items, Etsy places 4 promoted items that are somewhat related to the search term inserted in the search box. Below the ads are the items in order of “most relevant.” So, generally speaking, if you want to run a search ad on Etsy’s site, you would pick the items in your shops that DO NOT show up on the first few pages of search, so you can get to the top. however, if your items DO show up, then it would be a waste of money to have pay to have the same item appear twice on a search for, example, knit sweaters.

The search ads are based on impressions. An impression is every time the ad appears on someone’s screen. The key is to make a “good impression” so to speak, to encourage searchers to click on your item and, ideally, buy your product. If you buy a search ad, you can track how many impressions your items are getting, how many views are a result of those impressions (how many people actually click on the item) and then, the most important, how many sales have resulted from those clicks.

Because some of my items are on the first pages of their important searches, and some are not, I went with picking only ONE item to use as an ad from my MegansBeadedDesigns shop, and 3 items–3 pairs of earrings– from my Glamour365 shop to advertise. I chose to run them for a week, and maxed my budget at $10. That mean I won’t pay more than $10, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I will reach that amount, as I would have to make that many impressions worth in a week in order to do so. I tried to pick items to run that I thought were the most representative of my shop. Along with trying to make sales, I have also been attempting to use these ads as a way to increase brand awareness.

After 6 days of running my ads, these are my results and conclusions:

Evil eye ring - $8.95

For MegansBeadedDesigns I used my green evil eye ring for my ad. My results: Impressions: 6,071, Spent: $6.01, Views: 35, Favorites: 5, Orders: 1, Revenue $8.94. I had used these tags: evil eye, eye ring, ring, eye

So while I did get a sale and 35 new favorites, I have already spent almost as much on the ad as how much I have made in sales FROM the ad. Unless some more of those favorites turn into actual customers, as a profiting venture it hasn’t really panned out. The result from my Glamout365 shop were even worse, but it could be that I used slightly more generic tags in order to obtain even more impressions:

earrings

Impressions and Views from Left to Right: Left: impressions: 1243, Views: 2, Center: Impressions: 2,021, Views: 6, Right: Impressions: 1,412, Views: 6

Total results from Glamour365 ads: Spent: $4.80, Impressions:4,676, Views:14, Favorites: 1, Orders: 0.

I had used these tags: blue earrings, earrings, dangle earrings, royal blue, costume jewelry, clip, and dangle.

Obviously, even those I haven’t gotten quite as many impressions as my MegansBeadedDesigns ad, I still fared much worse in my views and favorites results, not to mention no orders as a result either. Of course, I probably should have “wasted” my impressions on tags that were as generic as “costume jewelry” or “clip.” If I run an ad in Glamour365 again, I will follow closer to the choices I made with my MegansBeadedDesigns ad – choosing only one item to advertise, and selecting fewer tags that are more closely related to that item.

Before running more ads on Etsy, I think i would prefer to explore other off-site options. I became a member at Project Wonderful, and have started experimenting with their advertising options over there. When more results come of that, I’ll be sure to share my experience with it with my readers here! Hope this has been helpful to you are what decisions you make with Etsy advertising!
