Staying Relevant

I’m not going to pretend like I am a “relevancy expert” when it comes to the new Etsy search engine or anything, but I can tell what I have figured out and what works for me. It’s really, actually, quite simple. The example below is how I have made one of my headband listings more relevant:

Rhinestone Headband - $24.95

When trying to think about how someone on Etsy might LOOK for a headband like this, several possibilities comes to mind: blue headband, rhinestone headband, bridal headband, leaf headband, metal headband, beaded headband, etc., etc.

The thing is, your 3 first words are the most important, and whichever word I choose to put in front of the word “headband” is going to give it the most weight in the searches. For example, if I call this a “blue headband” then it will come up high in the searches for “blue headband” but not for “beaded headband.” Even if I title it “Beaded blue headband” the results are the same. What matters the most is which words are PUT TOGETHER, one directly after another. In this example, I went with “Rhinestone Headband in Blue Pearls and Crystals Leaf Pattern Hand Beaded – Completely Original and Unique – OOAK”

Green Headband - $24.95

I opted to use “rhinestone headband” as my all-important two words because “rhinestone headband” is searched more on Etsy than any of the other combinations according to Google’s Keyword Research tool. However, Etsy does not like to have the same seller over and over again in the first few pages of the search, so if I had several headbands similar to this one in my shop, I would change my all-important word before the word “headband” with each one, My next listing might be “Blue headband” and then “Beaded headband,” and so on and so forth.

Relevancy does not stop at the title, however. In fact, if you have a great title, it is not enough to make you relevant at all. The trick I have figure out is easy enough, but nonetheless significant. What I do with my listings is I copy the title of the listing, and paste it as the first sentence in my description. I’m not sure how much this helps, but from experimenting with different listings, it seems to make a difference. Also, Google crawls the first 120 characters of your description, so having all of the juicy words from you title in there probably do it a wold of good in that search engine as well.

Purple Headband - $14.95

Finally, it is VERY VERY IMPORTANT that you use your tags to match the EXACT phrases in your title. In this headband example, my first tag matches the all-important phrase in my title “rhinestone headband” and then the rest of the tags follow suit, fitting with the different words and phrases in my title such as “blue pearls” and “Beaded” etc.

The results? This headband shows up on the 1st page in a relevancy search for “rhinestone headband.” The great things about it is I don’t have to renew constantly to keep in there, simply having the title, the description, and the tags to fit made it work perfectly. Again, I am no search-engine expert, but with some experimenting, this is what I have come up with. I felt it was important information to pass on to you! I hope it’s helpful!

Fall Forward into Fashion

While I may already be mourning the brilliant sun and warmth of summer, there is one thing I am most certainly looking forward to as the season turns: Fall Fashion. No other season compares to the way Autumn sets the fashion trends. Style transforms as the leaves turn to such a delightful degree. This season I am seeing lots of flowing fabric, tweed, newsboy caps, and one-shoulder strap tops. Colors (besides the usual tans and browns) are deep blue, purple, burgundy and gray. Boots are always the the top footwear for the season, but add to them high-heeled platform pumps and thigh-high stockings or spats and you’re good to go. Button up jackets and scarves also appear to be taking over, pairing themselves with chunky and unique jewelry and hair accessories. Looks like it’s going to be a stunning season indeed. Bring it on!

Audio Book Reviews

Several post ago ago I boasted about the amazing amazing-ness of audio books. They are a wonderful discovery for someone like me, who has to schedule breathing and can barely fir in time for reading. Listening to audio books has become my favorite thing to do while working on my jewelry. Books and crafting simply make a great combination.

I promised some reviews on the books I have listened to so far. Some I would highly recommend, others, well, they weren’t for me. I’ll let. you decide what you think. In this post I’ll cover which books I’ve listened to from the Humor genre so far. Looking for a pleasant book or two, I’ve had these delivered to my kindle typically after a heavy horror novel. Some of them delivered on their promises of chuckles more than others.

“Letting Go of God,” by Julia Sweeny. I’m pretty partial to actress Julia Sweeny. Partly because she’s from where I live in the Inland Northwest, but also because she certainly knows how to deliver an engaging monologue. I purchased this audio book in remembrance of the video performance I had seen and thoroughly enjoyed, “God just said Hah!” Once again, she did not let me down. This short listen (just over 2 hours) is pleasant and heartfelt. Julia describes her adult struggles with her Catholic faith, and many of her observances came very close to my own at once time or another. But the best part is how well she handles such a delicate subject with a stream of humor that will leave you smiling and remembering.

“Bossypants” by Tina Fey. Tina does an excellent job of narrating her own book. She makes hilarious observations and remembers moments of her past that can be really touching. A little too much of the book is focused on her Sarah Palin impersonations, but I guess those are the same performances that shot her to fame. As a long time Saturday Night Live fan, this was a must-listen for me. It was awesome to hear about how many of the performers on SNL also do most of the writing, and just how much Tina puts into making 30 Rock. If you are looking for a laugh and a quality performance, this is an EXCELLENT choice in audio performance.

“America (The Audiobook)” by Jon Stewart and the Writers of the Daily Show. I’m a big fan of the daily show. As depressing as it is to sometimes only get “real’ news form a comedy network, I enjoy it thoroughly nonetheless. This audiobook is a bit outdated, as political material tends to be, but still a chuck-a-licious look at our country’s history and contemporary political process. Warning: it will make you mad at how much money runs our current system. The book includes several winning performances from Stephen Colbert and many other familiar comedies on and from the Daily Show. If you are worried about conservative-bashing and one-sided political opinion, you will not find it here. A pretty decent summary with lots of humor to pull you though.

“If You Ask Me (Which of course you won’t)” by Betty White. This book isn’t funny. Betty White is a sweet and adorable actress whom I just LOVE on screen. Buy this book if you want to hear about her work towards helping animals and a few tips on how to stay healthy. But other than that there really isn’t very much content in here. If you absolutely love Betty, then it’s nice to her her narrate her own novel, but other than that the story portion of the book is lacking. I did like hearing about little extras, such as the fact that she writes everything out in long-hand first before typing it on the computer. Also, hearing about her work with Sandra Bullock is fun. Not the quick-witting, often stinging humor you get from her comedic performances though. Which is unfortunate because she is so friggin good at them.

“America on Purpose” by Craig Ferguson. Craig is a hilarious light-night show comedian. In my opinion, none of the other late night shows even compare to his comfortable, conversational humor and witty banter. All delivered in that love-able Scottish accent. One of my favorite things about his audio books (which he also does the narration for) is hearing about what it was like to live in Glasgow, Scotland. Although i am of Scottish heritage, I have yet to visit Europe at all, Scotland included, so I love to hear about it in anticipation of my one-day travels. Unfortunately if you are looking for humor, as I expected this book to be filled with considering how funny Criag’s late-night performances are, I didn’t really find it here. A huge majority of the book is taken up with the mistakes of Criag’s earlier life. Drugs. Sex. Alcohol. More drugs. More sex. More alcohol. It is very transparent in that respect, as Craig kind of “bears-all” and is not ashamed to display his previous mistakes out for all of the world to see. He seems to hit “rock-bottom” several times before he finally seeks help and quits the booze and the drugs for good. I can imagine that his story would make an excellent read for anyone recovering form previous life addictions, as he does not paint these issues in any kind of positive light. They are exposed for the life-endangering and relationship-destroying substances they are. Good for him. There are times when I felt he was simply relaying event though, and more emotion or detail was needed to have kept my interest better. Otherwise it is just: Sex. Drugs. Alcohol. Bleh.

“Good Omens” By Terry Pratchett and Neil Giaman. I had quickly picked up this audio book after finishing and relishing American Gods, buy Neil Gaiman. This book is not at all the same. Of course, I figured it was more humorous and less of the serious, adult tone of American Gods by the reviews on Audible. “If you like British humor and Monty Python, you’ll love this book!” Is basically what many of the top reviews stated. I happen to L-O-V-E Monty Python, and from what I have seen of it, I don’t mind British humor either. However, this particular book, I did not much care for. While there are nuggets of chuck-a-li-cious humor similar to that of Monty Python, it is so crammed with puns and jokes and footnotes and trailings that the story line eventually disappears. As soon as it would start to pick up again and I could actually follow along, on would come more footnotes and gibber-gabber about randoms things that took far too long to explain. Also, I don’t mind a narrator with a British accent, Fool is a good example, this was just TOO much. I had to force myself to get through it, and I barely did at that. I had to keep switching to Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen just to give myself a break once in awhile. I don’t recommend this book until you REALLY, REALLY like British humor in a way I am no longer convinced I do anymore.

“Fool” by Chrsitopher Moore.
I purchased this book because the negative reviews concerning “Good Omens” recommended it as an alternative that is actually enjoyable. Also, I heart “Lamb” a gospel comedy by the same author. That was a book that actually had be laughing out loud. While I did not find this book quite a enthralling or funny as Lamb, it was still a nice alternative to “Good Omens” and a funny portrayal of the traditional Shakespeare tale of King Lear, told from the point-of-view of his court Jester. Quite of bit of shagging occurs however, so prepare yourself if you are apt to pick this one up.

I am Officially a Trade-A-Holic!

2 Fabric Button Bobby Pins - $9.95

There are some habits we are warned against even thinking about. Some things we are told, NOT EVEN ONCE. Because, the evidence shows, they can be very, VERY addicting. Apparently, trading goods for goods on Etsy is one of these things.

Too late. I’m hooked.

Fabulous gloves I got in a trade from salutationscrochet!

I can’t believe it took me so long to discover the magic of making trades with other Etsy sellers! This is the best thing since sliced bread! (Okay, I know that’s what I referred to audio books as in an earlier post, but I’m short on analogies at the moment.) Trading is a great way to satisfy my shopping addiction without emptying my paypal account – and sharing some of my goodies to folks all around the world in the process. Talk about great fun.

Green Heart Earrings - $12.00

In the last few days I’ve conducted close to a dozen trades. I know, it’s a lot, but like I said before: I’m addicted and I just can’t help myself. I was invited to join the Etsy Trade-A-Holics team and the Etsy Trades A and Barters team. I immediately started to comb the members for prospect and sending out convos to items which snagged my attention.

Of course, several of my convoes have been ignored, and some of my offers rejected, but out of all of them I’ve actually gotten quite a few pretty awesome trades! Ti’s also helping me to discover some shops out on Etsy that I wasn’t aware of before!

This addiction, I can only assume, isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Feedback Fueds

After having been a seller on Etsy for a little over a year now, I must come clean of one of my gravest fears. Feedback. Feedback can be a very, very scary thing. For an eBay seller with a bazillion sales of manufactured items, a feedback score of 98% really isn’t too hurtful. However, on Etsy many would consider a 98% feedback to be awful, and not consider buying from that seller.

Beaded Ring - $4.95

Feedback is more of an issue on Etsy because you are dealing with handmade items. One would assume that the quality of a handmade item would always be comparably better than that of a manufactured one, but this is not always the case. A handmade item is not inspected by anyone for quality control purposes, so we have to simply take the seller at his or her word that it is worth the price they are asking for it. This is where feedback comes into play. Form a buyer’s point of view, I always check the feedback of a seller, especially if I see that they have a score of less than 100%. I have been burned before, and would rather not have the same situation occur again. However, I’m even afraid to leave a seller a negative on a product that was poorly constructed or didn’t arrive until I absolutely have to, out of fear that the seller will retaliate and give me one in return.

Butterfly Earrings - $9.00

However, now that I have gain my own negative, and had to deal with a debacle of hoops to try to get it changed, I am now a little more sympathetic towards the seller with only 1 or 2 negative in a plethora of positives.

In the situation referenced above, a customer ordered 2 items. A beaded ring and a pair of earrings. Both were sent to her in the same package and arrived shortly thereafter. A few days later I received raving feedback over the beaded ring, but not the earrings. I simply assumed that the customer accidentally only left the one feedback, thinking that it counted for both – and forgot about it completely. Of course, I gave the customer two good feedback ratings for the two items, thanking her for her interest in my shop.

Tea Cup Ring - $7.00

About a month later, I received a negative feedback for the earrings, the comment being “never received.” Waiiiit… what? I know she got them because they were in the same package as the ring, and I sent them together. She claimed to have received the ring, and even left a positive for it. I immediately contacted the customer. Did she check the package? Had she thrown it away already? They had been sent together so it should be in there!

She checked. The earrings were there. Oops.

So I sent a kiss and makeup request, so glad that this debacle could be taken care of before the negative did any damage towards my shop. I wouldn’t want prospecting customers to think that I ignored orders that aren’t received!

Problem was, the customer couldn’t figure out how to agree to the kiss and make up I had sent.

It took over TWO MONTHS, several attempts at contacting admin and dozens of convos later before the customer FINALLY figured out how to change the negative feedback. This is a long time to be at 98% in an Etsy shop. There is no way I will know if I lost any customers during that time period or not because of the red mark, but I am glad that it was finally taken care of.

Sparkle Earrings - $5.00

If only there has been a simple pop-up reminder, something to the effect that eBay utilizes, that asked “Have you contacted the seller?” when she tried to leave her negative… I can think of so many scenarios where this would be SO HELPFUL. If a customer does not receive a package I send, or the items arrives damaged, I try to do everything in my power to satisfy the customer and replace or refund the product. However, if the customer never contacts the seller asking for the refund or replacement (or in my case, what was just simple confusion) then how are we supposed to grapple with the negatives once we get them? My faith in the kiss and make up system has been severely wounded at this point. For some buyers who are new to Etsy, apparently, it is too complicated for them to figure out.

I do hope that with Etsy rethinking the feedback system that they will implement something of this nature in place. It would do a world of good. In the meantime, I’ve become a little softer towards sellers with less-than-perfect scores. Mistakes can happen to anyone.

Eye See Yew!

Eyeballs are awesome. For real, they are absolutely incredible works of biological and genetic art! Humans use their eyes to see. They do so by detecting light and converting it into electro-chemical impulses in neurons. Yet, even though we use our eyes to look at things, I also find eyes themselves as something very compelling to look at.

Glass Eye Ring - $11.00

Our eyes have been referred to as the windows to our soul. This analogy was probably penned because of the complex beauty they display. The deep black of the center of our eye tells the story of our life and experiences, while the gorgeous array of color surrounding it describes our character and personality. The whites of our eyes frame this picture, and are often curtained with a layer of lashes. Such a lovely thing to depict in art, and in jewelry.

Beaded Eye Earrings - $9.95

I am in love with my line of Evil Eye pieces, and am excited to be making more to be on display soon! I hope you love them too!

Evil Eye Ring - $8.95

I See You Ring - $8.95

Guess who made it to the Etsy front page!?!?!

Making the Etsy front page. It’s kind of a big deal. In fact, it’s such a big deal that I honestly-HONESTLY-had come to the conclusion that no matter how many treasuries I was put in, or how many I made, it was never going to happen to me.

And then… SURPRISE! A big surprise too! My secondary shop, Glamour365, was the one that made it. The shop that is only on 3 treasury teams instead of dozens like my main shop, MegansBeadedDesigns. The shop I don’t put as much effort into. What are the odds of that happening?

Also, I happened to be home, and on my computer when this phenomenon occured. Talk about lucky! I often read about people being featured in the middle of the night when they are asleep, or during the day when they are at work, only to discover it later. But I was lucky; I was present and bursting with excitement when the exposure began. I was just starting to list a few new drafts to be posted the following morning when my activity feed started to go crazy. Because I am the obsessive kind of seller, always hoping for some new shop love, I checked it hopefully.

Featured Ring - $7.00

Oh, my goodness! I was getting a butt-load of hearts! It was insane! While quite a few of my items were getting hearts, one ring in particular was receiving heart after heart after heart. I knew something was going on, that my ring was being featured somewhere, but I didn’t even think to THINK of the front page. My ring sold in an instant. Since it was receiving so much attention, I thought it only smart to renew the sold item. That’s when I discovered where all of the attention was from. I all but started to jump up and down. My ring was on the front page!!!! I had achieved the impossible and made it to the coveted Etsy front page!

I don’t know what all of those forum complainers are talking about. Being on the front page was not “not a big deal” it was a HUGE deal for me! I received close to 1000 views in the matter of a single HOUR. I received over 50 hearts of the featured item, and also lots of shop hearts and several hearts on my other items. I SOLD the featured ring. I don’t know about you, but I think all of those things add up to a pretty big deal in my opinion.

Of course, I can help but regard with envy some of the shops that get to be on the front page everyday, but that is another topic for another time (too negative for me right now.) For now, I am going to enjoy my victory and ecstatically wait and hope for it to reoccur!
